In the history of evolution, the evolution of multicellular and large complex organism was the major transition. A study was carried by William C. Ratcliff. at Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, USA in 2014 and their work was published on 15 Jan 2015 in nature communication entitled as “Origins of multicellular evolvability in snowflake yeast”
They carried their study on yeast i.e. Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They found that the single gene mutation can bring the evolutionary change and that gene was ACE2 in yeast. This provides the clues about the ability of single cell organism into multicellular organism.
Same type of study published in another article entitled as “Experimental evolution of multicellularity” by William C. Ratcliffa, R. Ford Denisona , Mark Borrelloa , and Michael Travisano at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. This study was based on adhesive glycoproteins present in their cell wall. So mutation in these glycoprotein can also change the appearance of organism.
