you think you have isolated (r)-(-)-carvone from a mixture of spearmint and Caraway seed oil. how do you determine successfulness without smell or taste? how do you determine purity? what method could you have used and fundamental principal behind it?

Solutions

Expert Solution

how do you determine successfulness without smell or taste?

ANS. by NMR and mass spectroscopy we can check the sucessfull separation or not.

how do you determine purity?

ANS. by using polarimeter we can predict the purity of (r)-(-)-carvone.

what method could you have used and fundamental principal behind it?

ANS. the basic of this method is optical rotation of a a enantiomer. the recemic mixture has zero optical rotetion. the pure enantiomer has "+ ve" or "- ve" rotetion value and the the value is fixed for a particular compound. by comparing the observed rotetion value and the actual rotetion value we can calculate the optical purity that is enantiomeric excess of the corresponding compound.

You have isolated what appears to be an intracellular parasite from a blood culture from a human case of chronic fatigue syndrome in Chester County , Pennsylvania. Electron microscopic studies indicated that the isolate looks like a virus, but the results are not conclusive. Your virology/bacteriology training makes you believe that this isolate is either a new virus or a coxiella. Your virology professor tells you that your isolate is not a bacterium.. You are Gregor Mendel. You have 2 pea plants, one that grew from a green seed, the other that grew from a yellow seed. The parents of both plants were previously highly inbred so that each of your plants is homozygous at all genetic loci. You cross the 2 plants; the seeds that develop from the cross are the F1 generation. You count the seeds and compare the number of green seeds with the number of yellow seeds. Question 1:...
