Considering the angiosperm life cycle, explain the differences and similarities between a megasporocyte and a microsporcyte. Be sure to indicate what the ploidy level of these cells, what they produce, the processed used to make the products, and the ploidy level of those products. Explain the similarities and differences between an angiosperm, female gametophyte and an angiosperm male gametophyte.
Megasporocyte | Microsporocyte |
Represents megaspore mother cells | Represents microspore mother cell |
Diploid | diploid |
Present in ovary of carpel | present in anther of stamen |
Undergoes meiosis to form 4 haploid megaspores | undergoes meiosis to from 4 haploid microspores |
Only one megaspore remains functional | all the 4 microspores are functional and are produced in tetrads generally |
Female gametophyte | Male gametophyte |
haploid | haploid |
formed after reduction division | formed after reduction division |
Contains 8 nuclei and 7 cells | contains 1 nucleus and 1 cell |
Stays in ovary of plants | carried by wind or water or insects to stigma of flower and then it goes to ovary |
No divison further | in ovary, divides to form 2 sperm cells |
Similarities are in bold.
