Some of the limitations of deviation
from social norms is as follows:-
- The first reason is that social
norms are subject to change over time. The norms that were evident
some decades ago might not be the same now and this turns out to be
a major disadvantage of using social norms as a way of defining
abnormality.
- Social norms also tend to vary a
lot when it comes to different cultures. Something which is normal
is one culture might be considered as abnormal in some other
cultures. This is another limitation of using social norms as a way
of defining abnormality.
- Social norms definition also
suggests that anything which falls out of the social norms is
abnormal. This is not always the case and therefore this turns out
to be another limitation of using deviation from social norms as a
way of defining abnormality.
