9 block in relation to succession planning
A nine block model is a performance and potential matrix wherein employees are measured on their past performance and the future potential they carry in order to perform any given job. It is a very famous performance tool used in organizations.
Succession planning is a process through which finding out and developing new leaders who are treated as replacement for old leaders who quits organization due to many reasons like retirement, attrition etc. It is a proactive process followed in order to secure key positions.
Purpose of this model is to measure the performance and identify the performance rating of an employee. Also, it emphasis on finding out the future potential of the employees and then finds out the top talents in the organization. After these step by step processes, identifying the successors for any role through succession planning is the core step.
How it works:
· Every employee in an organization would fit into that box where his past performance and future potential would be marked.
· Management gets to know who are the top performers and least performers
· They also get to know who has the greatest potential
· A mix of Exceeding performance and Super growth potential employee would be the top talent of an organization and identified as successors for very important roles in the organization
Example:
Performance ratings can be from a scale of 1 to 3, 1 being the least performer and 3 being the excellent performer.
Potential rating can be on the potential an employee carries like normal potential, standard potential and fast growth potential.
In a box X axis would be performance and Y axis would be potential.
When an employee is high on both performance and potential, they stand a more chance of becoming successors for any role.
