Like other divisions such as Eons, eras, and periods, epochs and ages are separated by significant changes in rock layers, but also are more specifically distinguishing the time scale, the rate of formation, how life began, how humans evolve, how birds first appeared and many more. These divisions on Geologic time scale helps in determining the states through which our planet Earth has went through to become what it is like today. The significant changes in the rock layers during divisions of time depicts the lifespan, fossils show the species diversity at that time, differrent colours made it possible to recognise which thing came first, etc. So basically time through millions and millions of years is divided into larger parts of eons which are further subclassified into eras and periods and epochs and ages. What these time zones specifically describes is the basic structural entities of that time on Earth. It also have helped in placing the birth of things in order.
