There has been a law in place since 1963 requiring women and men be paid the same for the same job.
How is it that there can still be such a difference in compensation for men and women?
What are 3 actions that could be taken in the United States to ensure men and women are paid the same for the same job?
In this developing world women still earn less than a men, one of the reason for getting less pay is that women are only offered some of the basic jobs only like secretary, nurses which are paid less because they are less educated than men as from the beginning they are restricted and have a lot of family responsibilities so they cannot focus on their education and even if women get a job position as similar to men they are still paid less due to gender discrimination. Secondly new moms and women also have responsibilities of their family and child, as a result, they are more focused on them rather than to organization resulting in lesser chances of promotion and hiring. along with this, a study shows that women negotiate less with the organization on salary structure as compared to men and it is a result of lack guidance and confidence. Women don't have proper knowledge on how to negotiate their salaries so they don't negotiate much and this results in gender pay gap.
The three actions that could be taken in the United States to ensure men and women are paid the same for the same job are as follows-
1) There should be transparency in salary. The manager should establish some policies in which salary structure should be visible to each and every employee and in this way women will be more aware of what their male colleagues are earning. So in this way, women can be motivated to negotiate with the employers for the equal pay.
2) The company should run mentoring and training programmes for women to teach them and give guidance on how to negotiate their salary and working structure. This will result in making women more aware about the conditions and these types of programmes and training will make them more confident and will give them a motivation to earn more and they will eventually reduce the gender pay gap.
3) There should be paid leaves for new moms as well as the childcare facilities for the moms to keep their child and work properly in the office. Women are more worried about their newborn babies this is one of the reasons they don't work after they have a kid, so the companies should have proper childcare facilities within their company premises where they can bring their child and keep them safe. This will promote and motivate women to work even after they have newborns with them.
