IR Absortion
1.What are the 4 functional groups that always present
absorptions with easily recognizable shape, position and intensity?
(4) Explain.
2. What type of vibration requires more energy to produce, one of
stretching or one of bending
1) IR spectroscopy is used to identify the functional groups present in a compound.
Alkyne :2150 cm -1, medium, for carbon-carbon triple bond and 3300 cm -1 , strong ,for C-H
Nitrile : 2250 cm -1 , medium , for Carbon-Nitrogen triple bond
Aldehyde : 2690-2840 cm -1 ( 2 bands) , medium , for aldehyde C-H bond and 1720-1740 cm -1 , strong, for carbon - oxygen double bond.
Alconol : 3200- 3500 cm -1 , strong and broad , for O-H bond and 1000-1200 cm -1 ,strong , for C-O bond
2) More energy is required to stretch a bond as compared to bend a bond. Because it is difficult to stretch a bond than to bend it.
