2. Why do we say "all the oxygen we breathe comes from the splitting of water?" Explain in your own words.

Expert Solution

Photosynthesis is the process of formation of carbohydrate from energy coming from sun light. Photosynthesis is the process takes place in cynobacteria and plants. Photosynthesis is decided into two stages- light dependent reaction and light independent reaction.

Light dependent process takes place in thalakoid grana of chroloplast. It is also known as light reaction. During this ATP and NADPH are generated from photons of sunlight. In this water acts as electron donor and get oxidised to molecular oxygen (O2 ). Molecular oxygen is released in environment and from NADPH and ATP glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate is generated through light independent reaction or Calvin cycle. Later glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate forms glucose. Molecular oxygen released by chloroplast of plant cells and algae is we use for breathing. So this oxygen is generated by splitting of water. So all oxygen we breath come from spliting of water that take place in plants and algae chroloplast.

In this shown how oxygen is generated during light reaction from spliting of water during photosynthesis.
