What is the importance of the cell membrane in maintaining homeostasis ?
Homeostasis
Homeostasis means stability or maintaining equilibrium in internal and external environment in cell to compensate environmental change.
Importance of cell membrane
Cell membrane protect the cell from its surroundings.
Cell membrane provides selective permeabllity to ions, organic molecules and it regulates the movement of substances from inside to outside & vice versa.
Cell membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins generally known as fluid mosaic structure.
Lipid bilayer of cell membrane prevents direct entry of water and ions.
Homeostasis is very important because maintaining salt & water balance to maintain body temperature by osmosis is important process for cell survival.
In cell most of enzymes function optimally at room temperature, cell membrane allows particles equilibrium in and out.
If homeostasis breaks down, organ, systems or even single cell unable toperform their functions lead to disease or even death.
