Compare human and sea urchin development prior to and after the gastrula stage.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Human gametes and sea urchin gametes are of same size and both of their development is quite similar through the gastrula stage. Both of them are deuterostomes with radial cleavage. At a distant site of gastrulation originates mouth.

The gastrulation of sea urchin begins from the flattened epithelium at vegetal pole of the embryos called vegetal plate. It invaginates following PMC to form stout cylinder called archenteron. Secondary mesenchymal cells present at tip of archenteron begins to elongate across blastocoel and touches the ectoderm. Then PMCs secrete spicules. The ectoderm then flattens forming prism stage. Then gut, endoderm, skeleton differentiate to make pluteus larva.

Formation of primitive streak is the first stage of gastrulation in human. The strike is the more like of body which separates into right and left side. This imparts bilateral symmetry. The three corresponding layers invaginate starting from endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm. Below primitive streak mesoderm forms notochord from a thin rod of cells.

3rd set of experiments You inject one veg1 cell from a 64 cell stage sea urchin embryo with a fluorescent dye in each of 10 embryos. In embryos at the pluteus stage both ectoderm and gut endoderm cells fluoresce in all embryos. Questions Are veg1 cells in 64-cell stage sea urchin embryos specified to become endoderm only? What is the evidence?

Problem 1. Molecular Genetics A sea urchin mutation results in an unusual positioning of the mitotic spindle during the very first cleavage division:instead of the zygote dividing along the animal-vegetal axis, the cell is now dividing perpendicular to the A-V axis (as if a globe were divided in halves at the equator plane). You decide to repeat Hans Driesch’s 19th century experiments, carefully separate the resulting blastomeres and let them develop further. True or false? Since sea urchins are known...
