Discuss what is meant by line and load regulation. Should they be high or low if you want a quality power supply?
Discuss the differences between a shunt regulator and series regulator and how each works.
PLEASE NO HAND WRITTING
Line Regulation: The ability of power supply to maintain rated output voltage inspite of the changes in input line voltage is known as line regulation.
Load regulation: The ability of power supply to maintain rated output voltage insplite of changes in load is known as load regulation.
Both line and load regulation should be low.
Series regulator: In series regulator series resistance is connected with load. By varying value of series resistance we change voltage across series resistance due to which output voltage remains constant.
series regulator is more efficient since it does not draw full current when it is not needed by load.
Shunt regulator:In shunt regulator load is connected in paralell with load. a series resistance is also connected between supply and shunt regulator.
A part of current is drawn from series resistor to maintain output voltage constant. rest of the load current is drwn from shunt regulator. When load current is maximum current of shunt regulator is minimum. and when load current is minimum shunt regulator current is maximum. Thats why shunt regulator is less efficient.
