class rather than ethnicity is responsible for stratification in the Caribbean.
Stratification is dividing people into segments according to their colour, ethnicity, class etc. In Caribbean during 17,18 and 19th centuries people were divided into three class; namely
Upper-class (whites became overseers), Middle-class (free coloured and whites managed businesses, trade, shops etc.) , Lower class( black slaves were forced to do labour and we're treated as livestock). This culture of stratification remained in vicinity for ages and the divisions persist even now in some Asian and middle eastern countries. People were divided into classes for implementing authority of community over another and Various tasks were divided accordingly bring a proper working society as a result.
In this stratification class played major role and tasks like managing, defending, business, maintenance, etc were divided amongst these classes that run a society. A little significance was given to ethnicity as in all classes the ethnic wear and religious following were same on the quality of utilities and eating habits differed, rest was all same.
Upper-class sometimes implemented outrageous demands over its subordinate classes to claim their ownership over them to ensure proper authority among the colonies. In this process they banned any comforts for slaves and disregarded any demands they made and were dealt with brutality when revolting. This later drove people to cause mass scale revolution and claim their independence throughout the world from oppressive white colonials.
