If you played the same four-digit number every day (or any four-digit number for that matter) in the Big 4, how often (in years) would you win, assuming you have average luck?
In “Big 4” lottery, daily four digits are selected. It can be done with replacement. So the total number of different 4-digit numbers selected is:
10 × 10 × 10 × 10 = 10,000
To win this lottery a player must correctly match the four digits he drawn at random in the order with those four digits selected by the lottery officials. So to win the lottery there is exactly one favorable outcome for the player.
Assuming that a player has an average luck, if he played the same 4-digit number every day, there is chance of winning the lottery in any 1 day among 10,000 days of play.
We can express these 10,000 days into years as follows:
10,000/365 = 27.39
≈ 27.4 years
Therefore this player wins the lottery once in every 27.4 years.
