Why are the five kingdoms of life that were proposed by Robert Whittaker in 1969 an outdated representation of the tree of life? These five kingdoms were Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. Does Monera (prokaryotes) form a monophyletic group? If not, what are the two major groups of prokaryotes? What is currently being used for Eukaryotes instead of the following four kingdoms: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia? How has DNA sequencing provided a clearer image of the diversity of life?
