Which statement best describes ionic bonding in lithium fluoride?

A) The positive and negative charges of the ions cancel out.

B) A lithium atom shares on electron with a fluorine atom/

C) An electron is transferred from a lithium atom to a fluorine atom.

D) An electrostatic attraction exists between lithium ions and fluoride ions.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Step 1: Answer

Case 1: Single choice Answer

An electrostatic attraction exists between lithium ions and fluoride ions. ------> option (D)

Case 2: More than one  choice Answer

An electron is transferred from a lithium atom to a fluorine atom. ------> option(C)

An electrostatic attraction exists between lithium ions and fluoride ions.------> option(D)

Step 2: Explanation

Ionic bonding is a type of chemical bonding that involves the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions hence in case of lithium fluoride there will an electrostatic attraction exists between lithium ions and fluoride ions.

Ions are atoms that have either gained or lost one or more electrons. here fluoride ions that have gained an electron are negatively charged and they  are called anions and lithium Ions that has lost an electron are positively charged and  they are called cations. This exchange results in a more stable, noble gas electronic configuration for both lithium and fluoride atoms The ions produced are oppositely charged and are attracted to one another due to electrostatic forces.

[Note: Case 1: if single choice option then choose only option(D) because it describing the ionic bonding in better way

case 2: if more than one choice then choose option (C and D) because i just discussed that lithium ions loose one electrons and becomes cations wheres this one electrons gains by fluoride and hence fluoride acts as anions so which means there is an electron transferred from lithium atom to fluoride atom. ]

so choose option according to the given instruction
