Article Title: The Effects of Globalization on the Environment
Authors: Arno Tausch, Almas Heshmati
Summary:
The aim of the article is to establish the relation between globalization and world economic openness and sustainable development. This paper is quantitative research which initially explains the theory of environmental development. The paper discusses the neoliberal approach, which discusses the market methods of pollution control, and the commission approach which discusses the anticyclical policy, international corporation, demand, household savings, technology, etc. The article takes into consideration 26 standard predicor variables which accommodates "four freedoms" of goods, capital, labour and services and these variables are tested on the indicators of sustainable development. The strength of the article is its wide range of variables and also the choice of countries (175 countries) that have been taken for the analysis. Ordinary Least Square Multiple regression method is used for the analysis. The analysis found that as a result of the emergence of liberal policies has a negative impact on the environmental quality policy. The study found that Europen Monetary Union members are better at reducing ecological footprints. The article concludes that high foreign savings and the high reliance on foreign sources for savings are the main drivers of global footprints. The study also indicates that the population has a negative effect on the environmental variables. The study recommends that more studies have to be done and tested in this area to obtain unbiased and consistent results pertaining to this area. When most of the studies concentrate on the causes of environmental degradation, this article studies the environmental quality from the angel of different approaches which is an addition to this particular area of knowledge. Since the number of variables and the number of countries taken for the study is vast, the results are valid and reliable, and can be generalised and can be further used for policy implications
