Explain why the United States is a nation-state and why the state of Minnesota is not. What changes would be necessary for the state of Minnesota to become a nation and a state?

• The United States is comprised mostly English speaking citizens. 80% of Americans solely spoke English, and up to 95% of citizens stated they speak English well/very well, despite it not being their primary language. A nation is a group of people who feel bound by a common language, culture, religion, history, or ethnicity.

• The nation-state is one where the great majority are conscious of a common identity and share the same culture and that is why Minnesota is not a nation state.

• To become a nation state,Minnesota needs to become an area where the cultural boundaries match up with the political boundaries. The idea of nation-state is that the state incorporates people of a single ethnic stock and cultural traditions.
