N2O Nitrous oxide is also called as laughing gas is used as an anaesthetic for surgery. It is colourles, odourles gas. It was used alone in the early 18th century afterwards they started using this with ether or chloroform as Nitrous oxide alone was not efiicient for surgery. so Gas- ether inhaler invented by clover came into use which gave mixture of Nitrous oxide and ether in gaseous before giving stronger aneashesia this clover instrument helped in giving correct mixture of ether and Nitrous oxide. Modern anaesthesia instruments are more advanced still they use the same principal of clover gas ether inhaler. starting with Nitrous oxide and then administering more heavy anaesthetic.
