A horizontal beam of vertically polarized light of intensity
33.0 W/m2 is sent through two polarizing sheets. The
polarizing direction of the first is at 37.0° to the vertical, and
that of the second is horizontal. What is the intensity of the
light transmitted by the pair of sheets?
W/m2
According to Maluls law
I = Io*cos^2
I1 = 33* cos^2 37
I1 = 21.04 W/m^2
After second polarizer
I2 = I1*cos^2 ( 90 - 37)
I2 = 21.04*cos^2 (53)
I2 = 7.62 W/m^2
the intensity of the light transmitted by the pair of sheets = 7.62 W/m^2
