The image to the left is best described as what genetic tool used to determine gender and chromosomal abnormalities?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Karyotyping (karyo-nucleus, typing- testing) is the genetic tool which is very widely used to examine the chromosomes (genetic material) for their size, shape, structure and the number in an individual. Karyotype analysis can only be performed in the cells that are undergoing rapid cell divisions (bone marrow or chorionic villus) or can be activated in culture to divide (Skin fibroblasts and amniocytes etc.).

  • It can be used to determine the gender as in females, XX chromosome pair is present as compared to males who posess XY genotype. As the size and structure of Y choromosome is small and its acrocentric, it can be easily distinguished from X chromosome which is far larger in size.
  • Also, by understanding the morphology and ploidy of the chromosomes, Chromosomal abnormalities can also be identified. For eg- In Down's syndrome, 21st chromosome trisomy occurs that can be understood by karyotype analysis.

A genetic test is used to determine if people have a predisposition for thrombosis, which is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel that obstructs the flow of blood through the circulatory system. It is believed that 3% of people have this predisposition. The test is 95% accurate for those who have the predisposition, and 97% accurate for those who do not have the predisposition. Simulate the results for administering this test to a population of 100,000...

Two-Point Mapping The general strategy used to determine the genetic distance between linked genes is to: 1. Make all of the genes of interest heterozygous in an individual or strain 2. Examine the gametes produced in the heterozygous individual(s) Using our example above. You have two pure-breeding lines of plants, one with green seeds and short height (GG tt) the other with yellow seeds and tall height (gg TT). You cross the two strains to make the genes heterozygous. What...
