For the following exercises, express each description of a sum using summation notation.

The sum from of n = 0 to n = 4 of 5n

Solutions

Expert Solution

Consider the sum of terms of function:

5n

For n = 0 to n = 4

The description can be expressed with the help of summation notation of Greek capital letter sigma Σ. The above explicit formula will be written to the right of the sigma, lower limit of summation will be written below the sigma and upper limit will be written above the sigma.

Lower limit of above sum is n = 0 and upper limit is n = 4.

The explicit formula is an = 5n.

Now, use the summation notation to express the sum of terms as follows,

Sn = 4Σn=0(5n)

Sn = 4Σn=0(5n)

Using Θ-notation, provide asymptotically tight bounds in terms of n for the solution to each of the following recurrences. Assume each recurrence has a non-trivial base case of T(1) = Θ(1). For example, if asked to solve T(n) = 2T(n/2) + n, then your answer should be Θ(n log n). Give a brief explanation for each solution. (a) T(n) = 5T(n/2) + n (b) T(n) = 4T(n/2) + n2 (c) T(n) = T(n/4) + T(n/2) + n
