Melville has been a renowned poet, author and a person with his perspective on the onset and uncertainties related to the civil war. Melville found that after the election of US president after 1860, there were huge conflict between northern states of the America and Southern states of the America. Here, northern region was finding it good, but southern states were disliking the new president with the election and it created animosity in the America and started the beginning of the civil war. Melville described the view of a civil war as a most embarrassing and harmful event of the US history that was going to hurt the USA in terms of its values derived in its union. As per Melville, civil war had the capacity to break America into different states as regions were conflicting with each other. It was against the values and culture that led to the revolutionary war against the Great Britain and made America independent. Melville found that civil war was going to nullify the efforts of all those great leaders who made America to be safe, secure and a land of freedom where social structures were strong and sturdy. It deeply hurt Melville and he explained civil war using different sections in his poetic elaborations.
