The development of Biotechnology techniques has been a major focus of Biological research during the last part of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Select a technique associated with this technology and discuss the ethical issues associated with its practice. Be sure to discuss both the pros and cons of your choice. Please explain in a full paragraph.

Expert Solution

A technique associated with biotechnology can be genetic modification of the organisms by recombinant DNA technology. Plants, bacteria, fungi, and animals whose genes have been altered by manipulation are called Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)

Ethical issues are associated with such practice. Ethics includes a set of standards by which a community regulates its behaviour and decides as to which activity is legitimate and which is not. The major bioethical concerns pertaining to this technique in biotechnology are:

  • Use of animals in biotechnology causes great suffering to them.
  • Introduction of a transgene from one species into another species violates the 'integrity of species'.
  • Biotechnology is disrespectful to living beings, and only exploits them for the benefit of human beings.
  • Biotechnology main pose unforeseen risks to the environment, including risk to biodiversity

Pros and cons of producing GMOs are:

Pros

  • Genetically modified crops are more tolerant to abiotic stresses.
  • GMO crops have enhanced nutritional value, taste and quality of food.
  • They have increased efficiency of mineral usage by plants.
  • Improved resistance to disease, pests, and herbicides
  • Increased food security for growing population

Cons

  • Genetic modification of organisms can have unpredictable results when such organisms are introduced into the ecosystem.
  • It has been observed that GM food may cause toxicity and/or produce allergies.

Therefore, the Indian Government has set up organisations such as GEAC ( Genetic Engineering Approval Committee), which makes decision regarding the validity of GM research and the safety of introducing GM-organisms for public services.

During the past weeks, you have been introduced to software development planning techniques and tools. You have actually gained some experience using a few design techniques and tools in planning to create an application that meets business requirements. A design document was the resultant outcome of your efforts. You have also coded a couple object-oriented programs that meet these planned-for requirements. These tasks have given you a sense of what is required to plan for and to develop applications. In...

Your company's research and development department has been working on a new process that, if it works, can produce oil from coal at a cost of about $15 per barrel versus a current market price of $100 per barrel. The company needs $10 million of external funds at this time to complete the research. The results of the research will be known in about one year, and there is about a 50-50 chance of success. If the research is successful,...
