8. Consider a potato being baked in an oven that is maintained at a constant temperature. The temperature of the potato is observed to rise by 5°C during the first minute. What will be the temperature rise during the second minute? A. Less than 5°C B. More than 5°C C. Equal to 5°C D. No temperature rise

Solutions

Expert Solution

Less than 5 C.

According to Newtons law of cooling, the rate of change of temperature of an object is proportional to the difference between its own temperature and the ambient temperature, given as,

-ve indicates loss of heat.

K is material constant.

For heating, as in this case, there will be no negative sign,

From the formula, it can be observable that as the temperatre of the body approaches the surrounding or ambient temperature, the difference between them decreases, and hence the rate of change of temperature decreases, which means, in the same time step, (say 5min) the the change in temperature is less in the second 5 min step than in the first 5 min step.

We wish to see if the dial indicating the oven temperature for a certain model oven is properly calibrated. Four ovens of this model are selected at random. The dial on each is set to 300° F, and after one hour, the actual temperature of each is measured. The temperatures measured are 305°, 310°, 300°, and 305°. Assuming that the actual temperatures for this model when the dial is set to 300° are normally distributed with mean μ, we test...

The temperature in Gavin's oven is a sinusoidal function of time. Gavin sets his oven so that it has a maximum temperature of 290°F and a minimum temperature of 210°. Once the temperature hits 290°, it takes 20 minutes before it is 290° again. Gavin's cake needs to be in the oven for 30 minutes at temperatures at or above 260°. He puts the cake into the oven when it is at 250° and rising. How long will Gavin need...
