8. Consider a potato being baked in an oven that is maintained at a constant temperature. The temperature of the potato is observed to rise by 5°C during the first minute. What will be the temperature rise during the second minute? A. Less than 5°C B. More than 5°C C. Equal to 5°C D. No temperature rise
Less than 5 C.
According to Newtons law of cooling, the rate of change of temperature of an object is proportional to the difference between its own temperature and the ambient temperature, given as,
-ve indicates loss of heat.
K is material constant.
For heating, as in this case, there will be no negative sign,
From the formula, it can be observable that as the temperatre of the body approaches the surrounding or ambient temperature, the difference between them decreases, and hence the rate of change of temperature decreases, which means, in the same time step, (say 5min) the the change in temperature is less in the second 5 min step than in the first 5 min step.
