NH3,   CH4,   H2S,    H2O,   HCl

NH3,   H2O,   CH4,   H2S,    HCl

Solutions

Expert Solution

The increasing order of acidity will be

NH3< H2O<CH4<H2S<HCl

Explanation :- H2S is stronger. The explanation is the size of sulfur compared with the oxygen. Sulfur is bigger, so the overlap between hydrogen orbit and sulfur orbit is less efficient. For this reason, the H-S bond is weaker than H-O bond.

HCl is a stronger  acid than H2S because Cl is more electronegative than S.

The electronegativity increases along the period . Acidity of hydrides of corresponding elements increases with increase in electronegativity.

We can also matches with pka value of the respective molecules. More the pka , lesser the acidity.
