Write net ionic equations for the cases where oxidation-reduction reactions between metals and metallic ions were observed. (Be sure you balance the reaction so that the electrons balance.)
Copper in silver sulfate, zinc in silver sulfate, magnesium in silver sulfate, zinc in copper sulfate, magnesium in copper sulfate, magnesium in zinc sulfate.
1 ) Copper in silver sulfate
Cu (s) + 2 Ag+ (aq) ------------------------> Cu+2 (aq) + 2Ag (s)
explanation :
anode reaction: oxidation takes place
Cu(s) -------------------------> Cu+2 (aq) + 2e- , E0Cu+2/Cu = + 0.34 V
cathode reaction : reduction takes palce
2Ag+(aq) + 2e- -----------------------------> 2 Ag (s) , E0Ag+/Ag = +0.80 V
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
net reaction: Cu(s) +2Ag+(aq) -------------------------> Cu+2 (aq) + 2 Ag (s)
note 1: low reduction potential metal can act as anode and high reduction potential metal can act as cathode.
note 2 : similarly apply explanation for all above reactions . just i will write what you asked
2) zinc in silver sulfate
Zn (s) + 2 Ag+ (aq) ---------------------> Zn+2 (aq) + 2 Ag (s)
3 ) magnesium in silver sulfate
Mg (s) + 2 Ag+ (aq) -------------------> Mg+2 (aq) + 2 Ag (s)
4) zinc in coppersulfate
Zn (s) + Cu+2 (aq) -------------------> Zn+2 (aq) + Cu (s)
5) magnesium in copper sulfate
Mg (s) + Cu+2 (aq) -------------------> Mg+2 (aq) + Cu (s)
6) magnesium in zinc sulfate
Mg (s) + Zn+2 (aq) -------------------> Mg+2 (aq) + Zn (s)
