What is the difference between a right and a privilege? Do you think different legal standards should apply to each? (250 words PLEASE)
A right is inherent which does not need any permission or any special circumstances to enjoy the right. It is assured by the state to all the population living in the country. It is basically covered all the population. Example of rights is "right to education", "right to life" etc. which is provided by the government to all the citizens. Besides some circumstances, rights can not be denied to the citizen of the country. Exclusion of any person not possible from the rights.
Privilege is a grant of permission to do an act e.g if one party want to do rally then it needs permission from the authority to carry out it. In other words, it is not enjoyed by each and every citizen of the country, the person for whom the privilege is given can be enjoyed by him/her only. From our previous example, i.e right to life is for everyone but to keep gun it needs permission. So we can say the person who has permission to keep the gun has privilege over others. In privilege, we can exclude the persons who do not fulfil the criteria to enjoy the privilege.
As discussed above rights and privilege are different, so it is essential to adopt a different legal standard should apply. As in the example, the right to education requires that the person should be a citizen of the country to enjoy it but to keep the gun the person need other requirements. So we can not apply the same legal standard to both.
