  • RADON is a naturally occuring radioactive gas which is tasteless and odourless.It is formed during the radioactive decay of uranium.It was first identified by Earnst Rutherford in 1899.
  • Uranium is found in small amounts in rocks and soils and breaks down to radium and then radon.During decay of radon it emits alpha,beta and gamma particles .beta and gamma paticles penetrate the skin and body .
  • Radon belongs to inorganic substances - radionucleotides.
  • Radon gas in rocks( ignecious) and soils move to air,ground waer and surface water.Well water is possible source of radon. Radon gas is a single atom gas and penetrates materials like paper,leather,plastic bags ,paints,building materials etc
  • The presence of radon in the home can be identified by the presence of persistant cough,blood while coughing,wheezing,shortness of breath,hoarseness,chest pain,frequent bronchitis or pneumonia.
  • Radon gas causes cancer in humans specially lung cancer.It is calssified as a Group A carcinogen.
  • Radon products attached to the plants enters the food chain and serve as a way to cause cancer in humans.
  • The primary route of radon exposure is inhalation.
  • Radon has a half life of 3.8 days and the decay products gets trapped in the lungs and also carried in the blood circulation.
  • In the lung the radon decay products emits radiation dammaging the vital molecules by creating free radicals or DNA dammage or mutations that leads to development of cancer.
  • To prevent radon exposure,cracks and openings in the house should be sealed and a soil suction radon system should be set up in the homes.
  • Unfortunately there is no cure for radon exposure.
