Which one of the salts below is least soluble at 25oC?
Group of answer choices
MnS, Ksp = 2.3x10-13
PbCO3, Ksp = 1.5x10-15
AgCN, Ksp = 1.2x10-16
SrCO3, Ksp = 7.0x10-10
Solubility Product " Ksp "is used for salts
which are less soluble. In such salts there exists an equilibrium
between the concentration of the solid salt and the concentration
of the dissolved ions of the corresponding salt in the solvent. The
solubity product constant or solubility product
Ksp represents this equilibrium between the solid
and dissolved salt.
For a salt AB dissolved into
A+ & B- ;
Ksp = [A+][B-] / [AB] ; since [AB] = 1 since AB is solid,
Ksp = [A+][B-].
Thus higher the concentrations of ions A+ & B- ,
higher the Ksp, that means solubilty is greater for salts
having higher Ksp.
Here in the above question SrCO3 has the greatest Ksp of 7.0 x thus SrCO3 has the greatest solubility.
