Niels Bohr

a.) A dense explanation of the Bohr model. explanations of practicum used, derivations, and examples.

b.) Has future work disproven/improved/built on this discovery?

c.) how is this discovery important?

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a) Explanation of the Niels Bohr model -

Niels Bohr model of the atom is very small, positively charged nucleus which contains proton and neutron surrounded by negatively charged electrons. Mathematically, the gravitational force in a solar system and the attractive electrical force between the positively charged nucleus and negatively charged electrons in an atom are of the same form.

Niels Bohr model of the hydrogen atom which can be shown in figure below :

Specifically, Bohr postulated that the angular momentum of the electron, mvr (the mass and angular velocity of the electron and in an orbit of radius r) is restricted to values that are integral multiples of h/2. The radius of one of these allowed Bohr orbits is given by,

r = n h / 2 m v

where, h = planck's constant

(b) The future work has improved on this discovery. The Niels Bohr contributed the quantum theory of atomic structure and today’s research of quantum physics which is our future.

(c) This discovery is very important because they can used to explain the structure of all atoms. He expanded the Rutherford model upon this theory by proposing that electron travel only certain successively large orbits. Niels Bohr postulated atomic theory based on quantum theory that the negatively charged electrons travel around the positively charged nucleus in a stationary orbit.

The Bohr model of the atom was an early attempt, by Danish theoretical physicist Niels Bohr in 1913, to understand the properties of atoms by incorporating the wavelike nature of electrons into an otherwise classical description. The basic assumptions of the model are: a. An electron in an atom moves in circular orbits about a positively charged nucleus, with the Coulomb attraction providing the centripetal force. b. Since electrons are waves, an electron may only (stably) orbit the nucleus at...
