INTRODUCTION
A Prestressed concrete is a type of concrete used when the load to be taken by the concrete structure is huge. This concrete is compressed during its production so that it attains strength against tensile force which will act upon it after construction.
The prestressed concrete is made by tensioning high strength tendons which are located inside the concrete. Once the concrete is compressed by tensioning the tendons the concrete will have characteristics of high strength concrete.
According to the time at which tensioning of tendons is done prestressed concrete is of two types, pretensioned concrete and post tensioned concrete. As the name indicates in pretensioned concrete the tendons are tensioned before the concrete is cast and in post tensioned concrete tendons are tensioned after the concrete is cast.
SUMMARY
So prestressed concrete in the form of pretensioned concrete or post tensioned concrete can be used in all the civil engineering structures which are subjected to huge amount of load during its service, like buildings, dams, bridges, nuclear stations, piles, tanks etc.
This type of concrete also provides the strength that can be attained by using high strength concrete mixes which require higher amount of cement and other admixtures which creates huge construction cost as well.
