What, if any, difference exists between Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)?
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT): As connectivity and communication evolved across the world there was a need for a standardized time for coordination and communication.Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was the first step in this direction and the time difference for other places from GMT was represented by +/- respective hours from GMT.
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC): Essentially successor to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), UTC is currently the primary standard time across the world. UTC offset is used to help represent the time of a particular place in terms of standard UTC time. For example, for a place that is 2 hours head of UTC the UTC offset will be + 02:00 and the time will be represented as UTC+02:00.
While in the casual us two are interchangeably used, GMT is mean solar time at Royal observatory based on Earth's rotation. UTC, a more precise system, is based on the atomic clock with leap seconds added.
Presently, while GMT is used as a time zone at certain places, UTC is not. UTC rather is a standard time that forms basis for time zones across the world.
