Atoms of two adjacent elements in the fourth period are in the ground state. An atom of element A has only s electrons in its valence shell. An atom of element B has at least one p electron in its valence shell.

Solutions

Expert Solution

As the atom of element A has only a electrons in it's valence shell, so it's either an s block element or a d block element.

As the atom of element B has atleast one p electron in its valence shell, so it's a p block element.

As the two are from adjacent groups, so A must be from group 12 and B must be from group 13.

As both are from the fourth group, so A is zinc (Zn) and B is gallium (Ga)
