Expert Solution

Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. Qualitative data collection methods vary using unstructured or semi-structured techniques. The sample size is typically small, and respondents are selected to fulfill a given quota.

Qualitative research methods are designed in a manner that they help reveal the behavior and perception of a target audience with reference to a particular topic. The results of qualitative methods are more descriptive and the inferences can be drawn quite easily from the data that is obtained.

The following are the qualitative research methods-

  1. One-on-One Interview

Conducting in-depth interviews is one of the most common qualitative research methods. It is a personal interview that is carried out with one respondent at a time. This is purely a conversational method and invites opportunities to get details in depth from the respondent.

  1. Case study research

The case study method has evolved over the past few years and developed as into a valuable qualitative research method. This type of research method is used within a number of areas like education, social sciences and similar. This method may look difficult to operate; however, it is one of the simplest ways of conducting research as it involves a deep dive and thorough understanding of the data collection methods and inferring the data.

  1. Record keeping

This method makes use of the already existing reliable documents and similar sources of information as the data source. This data can be used in a new research. This is similar to going to a library. There one can go over books and other reference material to collect relevant data that can likely be used in the research.

Limitations to qualitative research-

Time consuming process

The major drawback associated with qualitative cultural analysis is that this process is time-consuming. The second potential problem with qualitative research is that a particular problem could go unnoticed (Bowen 2006). Also the interpretations of researchers are limited. Personal experience and knowledge influences the observations and conclusions related to research problem.

No result verification in qualitative research

As qualitative research is mostly open-ended, the participants have more control over the content of the data collected. So the researcher is not able to verify the results objectively against the scenarios stated by the respondents.

Difficult to investigate causality

Researchers find it difficult to investigate causality between different research phenomena. Qualitative research is little complex to explain the difference in the quality and quantity of information obtained from different respondents and arriving at non-consistent conclusions

Give an explanation of two criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research designs. Next, explain how these criteria are tied to epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying philosophical orientations and the standards of your discipline. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in qualitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions.
