In the US women are payed around 81-82 cents to one dollar when compared to men. The rest of the world falls somewhat in between. Europe is better, with the northern countries reaching about 90 cents to one dollar, while other parts of the world fall way lower.
What I want you to do is to is to discuss and think why this gender pay gap is disastrous for societies in economic terms. I encourage you to think of this in terms of negative economic consequences. Generally, we know why this is not acceptable or fair in political/social terms, but we are less aware why this is an issue that goes way beyond political correctness or fairness. The idea is that by focusing on the economic consequences of the pay gap we can better understand the magnitude of this issue and its centrality to the twenty first century.
