The ant Myrmecia pilosula is found in Australia and is named bulldog because of its aggressive behavior. It is particularly interesting because it carries all its information in a single pair of chromosomes. In other words, 2n = 2. Assume that a G1 somatic cell nucleus in an ant (Myrmecia pilosula) contains 4 picograms of DNA. How much DNA would be expected in a metaphase I cell of the ant Myrmecia pilosula (2n=2 )?

a. 2 picograms
b. 4 picograms
c. 8 picograms
d. 16 picograms

Solutions

Expert Solution

Here, the correct answer is 8 picograms.

Explanation -

The cell division is the process in which first of all cell prepares itself for cell division then division takes place. The cell cycle is divided into following phases : G1 , S, G2 and M phase.

During G1 phase the cell performs it's metabolic functions. During S phase the DNA duplication takes place. During G2 phase all other machinery needed are assembled and during M phase actual divisions takes place.

Thus here 2n = 2 that means the diploid somatic cell has 2 chromosomes weighing 4 picograms.

During S phase the amount of DNA will be doubled. So, during the Metaphase of the M phase the cell contains double the amount of chromatids.

Thus, it will weighs 8 picograms in weight.

Two different ant species, Pseudomyrmex and Myrmica, are sometimes found together on the branches of acacia trees. Researchers remove all Pseudomyrmex from one acacia tree. They observe that after removal, the population of Myrmica begins to increase. From another acacia tree, they remove all Myrmica, and notice that this has apparently no effect on the population of Pseudomyrmex. Several weeks later, the researchers observe that the tree with no Pseudomyrmex has been grazed to a stump by local tapirs. The...

The price of petrol in Europe is almost three times that in Australia, mainly because the European petrol tax is higher than the Australian petrol tax. How would an increase in the petrol tax in Australia to the European level change carbon emissions? Would this tax increase bring greater efficiency, or would it increase deadweight loss? In your response use a diagram/s if possible.
