The rate of biomass production per unit area is called
productivity. The proportion which remains after respiration losses
in the plant is termed as net primary productivity (NPP). NPP of
savanna rangelands normally lie between 200-2000
g/m2m2/year. The physical characteristics which
influence this productivity are:
- Climate- it the most important physical attribute affecting the
productivity. Savannahs are always found in warm and hot
climates.
- Temperature - usually ranges between 24-29°C
- Precipitation- In Savannahs annual rainfall averages
30-50cm.
- Distribution- Distribution influences the productivity of
Savannah rangelands, ranging from equatorial and subequatorial
regions.
- Soil- Soil is porous, having a thin layer of nutrient rich
matter called humus.
- Selective forces- Three major selective forces- that influences
the productivity in Savannahs are
- Recurring fire
- Periodic drought
- Grazing
