Solutions

Expert Solution

Following are some physical properties of membrane which get affected by lipid composition.

a) Fluidity- Membrane of a cell is fluidic in nature. This fluidity depends on packaging of lipid. In membrane proteins slides around their places which is possible due to fluidic nature of membrane.

b) Diffusion - Viscosity of membrane affects diffusion of protein and other biomolecules through membrane. This viscosity is dependent on lipid composition of membrane.

c) Stability and Transient membrane- Heterogeneous nature of membrane leds to stability of membrane. Components like lipd rafts, caveolae, coated pits make membrane Heterogeneous. These all are lipid composition dependent.

d) Heat tolerance- In archea, thermophiles exist which has ability to tolerate heat and this is due to ether bonds presence in membrane which make membrane more strong in nature .

Why can the physical properties of an unknown substance be used to determine the identification of the substance? Design an experiment to determine if your salt is hygroscopic, deliquescent, efflorescent, or none. Note: this design does not need to be exactly what is followed in the lab. For full credit, a conscientious effort must be shown in your design.
