Question 7
A strain of E. coli is grown under aerobic conditions. However, this strain has an inactivating mutation in the enzyme that converts Pyruvate to Acetyl-CoA. What is the consequence of this mutation?
1. The organism cannot fully oxidize glucose, but can metabolize fats and some amino acids
2. The organism can metabolize as normal
3. The organism cannot carry out glycolysis
Question 4
Which of the following organisms are directly beneficial to vascular plants?
1. mycorrhizae |
||
2. water molds |
||
3. lichens |
Answer 7) 1 is the answer.
it is given that the mutation is found in the E coli. This mutation leads to in activate the expression of genes which will lead to produce the enzyme which is responsible for converting pyruvate to acetyl coenzyme. Hence there is not found any conversion of pyruvate to acetyl coenzyme in the presence of this mutation. The glycolysis is found before the mutation. Hence the glycolysis process is normal in this mutation. There is not found normal metabolism because of this mutation. But the pyruvate is not converted into acetyl coenzyme a. That's why the krebs cycle and electron transport chain do not take place. Hence it will not metabolise glucose completely.

Answer 8) 1st is the right option.
Mycorhizzae is the association between fungus and the root of higer plant. Fungus will provide the phosphate ion to the tree. Where as plant provides glucose and shelter to fungi.
Water molds leads to pathogenicity in tree. It will harm the tree.
lichen is the association between fungus and algae. They are not associated with plant.
