What impact does an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels have on the world’s oceans? In your answer discuss what happens to oceanic pH levels when carbon dioxide and water are combined. Please be sure to include the chemical equation to describe this reaction. What organisms are most impacted by these pH level changes? How can this potentially affect other organisms that share a habitat or a food web with those that are most impacted?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • The CO2 released from various sources such as burning of fuels does not remain in the air around but gets dissolves in the ocean water causing decreasing the pH.
  • When the CO2 are mixed with water it form carbonic acid which is more acid. Tht is CO2 + H2O -----> H2CO3. The carbonic acid is a weak acid and like other acids it cause the release of H+ from the solids on which it act and the H+ level increase cause lowering of pH.
  • It has been shown that there is a decrease in pH from 8.2 to 8.1 then also further decrease that is 0.4 to 0.3 from 8.1. Also not that decrease from pH 6 to pH 5 cause ten times more acidic.
  • The rise in the pH cause acidification of the surface layer of the ocean then spread to deeper layer causing full acidification.
  • Usually the buffering action of ocean water can stabilize rise in the acidity but the concentration of CO2 rise to such a high level that it cannot be buffered this lead to ocean acidification.
  • The rise in the CO2 not only cause decrease in the pH but also bind to carbonate making them unavailable to corals, oysters, mussels and many other shelled organism.
  • Thus with rise in CO2 level the more affected are shelled organism and corals, whose number get depleted. As the Ca2+is required to be bind with carbonate from the surrounding area to form calcium carbonate to form shell but the carbonate have more sensitivity to H+ compared to Ca2+ thuus instead of CaCO3 bicarbonate ions to prevent acid concentration so there life is distracted.
  • Also te too much concentration of H+ cause the dissolvation of the existing shell to release carbonate to form bicarbonate. This cuse further lodd of their habitat.
  • It not also cause loss of biodiversity but also affect the life of people who depend on the fisheries and aquaculture for their living.
  • The lives in the oceans get lost and all those depend on ocean habitat animals for their living also get affected.
