Spectroscopy Question
1.a)What color would Neptune be if it were orbiting a dim red dwarf star? explain your reasoning.
b)What color would Mars be if it were orbiting a bright blue giant star? Explain youre reasoning.
1] a] The large amounts of methane in Neptune's atmosphere absorbs the red wavelengths from Sun thereby reflecting blue wavelengths from its surface. This makes the Neptune blue in color. Now, if Neptune were to orbit a dim red dwarf star, the predominant wavelength incident on Neptune will be red and so no light will be reflected from Neptune. This will make it look black.
b] Iron-oxide and dust particles in Mars' soil scatter and absorb the blue wavelengths and reflect only red wavelength thereby making the planet appear red. If the Sun is now replaced with a bright blue giant star, there will be no red light to reflect and so Mars will appear black.
