HCN forms when synthetic fibers containing Orlon® or Acrilan® burn. Acrilan® has an empirical formula of CH2CHCN, so HCN is 50.9% of the formula by mass. A rug in the laboratory measures 12.0× 12.0 ft and contains 30.0 oz of Acrilan® fibers per square yard of carpet. If the rug burns, what mass of HCN will be generated in the room? Assume that the yield of HCN from the fibers is 20.0% and that the carpet is 41.0 % consumed.
1 square feet = 0.111 square yard
room area = carpet areas = 12 x 12 = 144 sq feet = 144 x 0.111 = 15.984 sq yards
Acrila nmass = ( 30 oz/sq yard) x 15.984 sq yards = 479.52
41 % carpet consumed hence acrilan mass = (41/100) x 479.52 = 196.6 oz
mass of HCN = ( 50.9/100) x 196.6 = 100 oz
now assuming 20 % geneartion fo HCN , HCN mass = ( 20/100) x 100 = 20 oz
