a) if gas bubbles are produced by a chemical reaction, how could you prove that the bubbles were composed of carbon dioxide?
b) if a solution is thought to contain chloride ions, how could this be detemined?
a) Lime water can be used to detect the presence of carbpn dioxide evolved in a chemical process.
For example
2HCl+CaCO3 ------------------------->CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O
As soon as the lime water comes in contact with carbon dioxide,it turns milky.
In this reaction setup, lime water is poured in one of the test tubes & sealed with a stopper. Small amount of HCl is carefully poured into the remaining test tube. A small amount of Na2CO3 is added to the acid, and the tube is sealed with a rubber stopper. The two tubes are connected. As a result of the acid-carbonate reaction, CO2 is produced and the lime water turns milky.
b Chloride ions in a solution can be determined by treating the given solution with silver nitrate .
The chlorid ions will precipitate precipitate as white colored mass of silver chloride
Ag+ + Cl- ------------> AgCl(s)
