ANALYZING THE CORE TEACHING OF SOCRATES

Socrates posed the following challenge to his fellow citizens: "...are you not ashamed of heaping the greatest amount of money and honour and reputation, and caring so little about wisdom and truth and the greatest improvement of the soul?" Do you think that this challenge is still relevant today? Explain your reasoning by giving some specific arguments and examples.

WHAT IS YOUR CONCEPT OF REALITY? - This covers the topics from Course Content II, IV and V (On Plato's and Aristotle's metaphysical beliefs).

It may seem like an odd question, but how would you describe your idea of "ultimate reality?" Is it physical reality of what you experience on a day-to-day basis? Or do you think of ultimate reality in terms of intellectual truths and insights? Or do you consider ultimate reality to be defined in terms of a spiritual metaphysics like Plato's? Explain.

Plato believed that the soul is immortal, that it used to exist in the World of Idea or Forms, it exists now with the body, and it will continue to exist even if the body dies. However, Aristotle believes that the soul is mortal, a natural phenomenon that gives meaning and purpose to the body - that it exists with the body and dies with it. Which metaphysical view, do you think, is more compelling or convincing? Explain.
