Since it was initially coined in 1949 by sociologist Edwin Sutherland, who called it "the crime of respect and a high standard of social standing in their profession," white-collar crime was synonymous with educated and wealthy people. "According to the FBI," one of the leading investigative agencies for such crimes is characterized by misleading, hidden, or trusts offenses

For instance, white collar violations are securities fraud or misappropriation or corporate fraud and theft. By comparison to the FBI, white crimes are committed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the National Securities Dealer Association (NASD) and government agencies.
