Expert Solution

The word thermodynamics derives from two greek words."THERME" meaning hot or heat and "DYNAMIKOS" means study of matter in motion. Thus thermodynamics is the study of heat related to matter of motion.

Thermodynamics is the science that deals with the relations between heat, work and properties of system. In the statistical a molecular thermodynamics, the behaviour of individual molcules is explained with significance.

Thermodynamics deals with the study of energy transformations with in the system and transfers of energy acorss the boundaries of the system. Thus a thermodynamic system may be defined as simply as region in space or control volume or quantity of matter upon which our attention is focussed for study.

2nd law of thermodynamics. (a) Explain the second law of thermodynamics and use an example to illustrate why this law is true. (b) Given the 2nd law of thermodynamics, how is it thermodynamically possible that a protein can spontaneously fold given the inordinate number of conformations available to it in the denatured form and the limited allowable arrangements in the native form (i.e., ΔS < 0 for the protein folding process).
