What answer should be reported, with the correct number of significant figures, for the following calculation (249.36+ 41.3)/63.7?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:

Remember the rules for significant figures in calculations:

  1. Addition and subtraction: the calculation is done in the normal way and the answer is rounded to the same number of decimal places as the number in the calculation with the Least number of decimal places
  2. Multiplication and division: the calculation is done in the normal way and the answer is rounded to the same number of significant figures as the number in the calculation with the Least number of significant digits

To define the significant figures in complex calculations (two or more different calculations) apply the same rule that for multiplication/division: do the calculation and the final answer is rounded to the same number of significant figures as the number in the calculation with the Least number of significant digits

In this case, the calculation is

  • 249.36 => 5 significant figures
  • 41.3 => 3 significant figures
  • 63.7 => 3 significant figures
  • Then, the answer must be rounded to 3 significant figures
