1. Carry out the following calculations, expressing each result with the correct number of significant figures:?

a) 16.421 g + 0.050 48 g = ? g

b) 4.6742 g / 0.003 71 L = ? g/L

c) 0.541 mL + 32.1 mL - 2.5833 mL = ? mL

2. The following cylinder contains three liquids that do not mix with one another:
water (density=1.0g/mL),
vegetable oil (density=0.93g/mL),
and mercury (density=13.5g/mL

-Which liquid is which?
a.Top liquid is?
b. Middle liquid is?
c. Bottom liquid is?

3. What is the mass (in kilograms) of a cube of silver that measures 0.67m on each side? (The density of silver is 10.5 g/cm3?)

Solutions

Expert Solution

1)

a) 16.421g + 0.05048g = 16.47148

Answer with correct number of significant figures = 16.471

b) 4.6742 g / 0.00371L = 1259.892g/L

Answer with correct number of significant figures= 1260

c) 0.541mL + 32.1mL -2.5833 mL = 30.0577 mL

Answer with correct number of significant figures =30.0mL

2) The density of water is 1.0g/mL.

The liquid having density greater than water goes below or settles below water and the one with density less than water floats above water.

Mercury has highest density it settles down at the bottom.

Vegetable oil has low density it floats above water.

In between these two water is present.

a) Top liquid is vegetable oil

b) Middle liquid is water

c)Bottom liquid is Mercury.

3.) Density = Mass/Volume

Density =10.5g/cm³

Volume of cube= a³

Given a = 0.67m or a =67cm

Volume of cube = (67cm)³

Volume of cube = 300763cm³

Mass=Density × Volume

Mass = 10.5g/cm³ × 300763cm³

Mass=3158011.5g

Mass in terms of kg= 3158.0115 kg or 3.158 × 10³ kg.
