What are the five tests that must be met for an individual to be considered a dependent as a qualifying child?
How to Fulfill Conditions?
There are special rules/ eequirements (5) for IndividualsPrescribed by IRS
These five requirements are:
1. Citizenship Following Condition relates to Citizenship
(i) legally adopted foreign child who now resides in the US
(ii) Individual must be a resident of US, Canada or Mexico for part os the year but mut be a US citizen,
(iii) He./ she must be , or
(iv) an adopted child living with you the entire year in a foreign country.
2. Support Following Rules relates to Supports
(i) Receive more than one-half of his/her total support from you.
3. Gross income Following Rules relates to Gross Income
(i) He/She have a gross income of more than $4,050. Note There are exceptions to this rule, which are
If the dependent is:
(a) your child, and is under age 19 on Dec 31 (Tax Year).
(b) your child, under 24 on Dec 31, (Tax Year), and a full time student for at least five months during the Tax Year
(c) a permanently and totally disabled person and receives an income for services performed for a tax-exempt organization.
4. Joint return
(i)Your dependent can't file a joint return with a spouse is you want to qualify for exemption.
5. Relationship
(i) He/ She must either be a relative or
(ii) A member of your household for the entire year.
